Clear your path change your life? What you see in the picture will explain some of what I’m going to write in this post. This represents the path you should take to improve your life. Some people are lucky and see a clear path, a way forward to a better future and for some of those it is even downhill with signs and pretty inspiring images along the way to keep them moving forward. For the extremely lucky it is like an airport and there is even a moving walkway that is moving them forward without any effort of their own at all. For most people it is like the one above, not too clear, leading to the unknown, there are pitfalls and dangers along the way and it is even uphill to make the work harder. For some all they can see are the trees all around them and no path at all.
So what can we do about it? If you were on the easy path you probably wouldn’t have even found this post and, if you had you would have stopped reading by now. So you must be looking for help. The good news is that everybody has got a path to follow and I will help you find it and follow it. The journey is worth it.
As you can see from the path it seems that it reaches a summit just a little bit further up. Who knows what the view from there is. It could be good, what we do know is that when you get there you will be further along and higher up than you are now so deserve a congratulations. Don’t forget to do this, you deserve a motivational marker along your journey.
I will start by looking at what to do if you are in the worst situation, no path at all to be seen. For this you will need to check out a previous post to get you started. In this post I describe your mind and your life as a garden and I give ways to sort it out and find your path. In this post I help you clear that path and make your journey clearer and maybe even easier to follow.
You will need to look for clues, the path in the woods means that all you see are trees around you BUT there are larger gaps where a path may be. What has this got to do with my life? Well the trees blocking your view and making it seem impassable are usually thoughts. Thoughts like
- I can’t do it
- I am scared of trying
- I can’t afford to take a chance right now
- maybe some other time
- my life isn’t really that bad
- I’m too old for change
these seem like solid reasons to stay where you are but they are all stopping you changing your life for the better and achieving your dreams. You need to look for ways through these thoughts, the gaps you are looking for are your interests and talents. Now you have a different set of answers
- What can I already do?
- What am I interested in?
- What do I find fun?
There’s a good chance that you are under utilising your skills and could get paid to use them. You could try and combine your skills and talents with your interests to get more fulfilment out of your life. Sometimes you may find that your interests may not be easily combined. For example you may be interested in animals but may have an allergy to animal fur. You could be good at administration, or sales or something else that could mean that you can help animals but be away from them. Work for animal charities maybe.
This approach should help you find at least one way to go. If there is more than one way you may just have to try them all until you find one that suits. Don’t get discouraged and just settle for the first one you go for unless it feels right, otherwise you will be back to where you started with slightly different surroundings. In a book called The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari there was only one path but I feel that all paths could be the same. His path was paved with diamonds. I understood from this that the path itself is valuable, there are things to see and lessons to learn along the way (diamonds), these might enlighten you to the things that you like or don’t like, hidden talents or even the talents that will not ultimately lead you to where you want to be. Like the path in the original picture you won’t be able to see these “diamonds” along the way unless you look for them.
This sounds like it will take longer than just following the path as quickly as possible to get to the “better” location. If you don’t find the clues you could just rush on and miss the signs, go to far and have to turn back or even get lost. These clues and lessons will guide you to the right path, even if they are just telling you that the path you are on is the wrong one.
Crossroads and delays.
There will be times on your path when you reach a decision point – a crossroads. You are faced with a choice of paths. You should treat this like the choice of paths you may have had at the beginning, give them a try and look for clues that tell you that you are going the right way.
There will also be times when you are slowed down – like traffic lights or traffic jams – or feel like you are going around in circles. Like the second picture above, the roads do go around but they end up on a different level or end up heading in the right direction if you follow them. These delays can be events in your life that need attention before you continue with say family, friends or special events. Take your time to appreciate them, even bad events, remember these as landmarks on your route, then move on.
Too often in this world we seem to move around desensitised to everything. We trudge to work oblivious of the birds and flowers and maybe even the people and the cars around us. Some go so far as to listen to music or play with their phones and tablets and block it out altogether, finding a way to escape from the world they are living in and look for another. When we do this we end up complaining that opportunities never came our way and we are destined to live poor lives, the reality may be that there were opportunities every day but you missed them all because you weren’t looking or listening for them. There’s a great quote in the film Scrooged where the ghost of Christmas present is trying to get Frank (Scrooge) to notice the present,
“sometimes you’ve got to SLAP them in the face just to get their attention”
During the whole scene she slaps him, punches him and even hits him in the face with a toaster to get his attention. Like a lot of us he is determined to ignore her, like opportunities that come our way. Live in the present pay it some attention and see what it is trying to show us.
