Yes, here it is again. Halloween. There are varying beliefs on this festival, some Christians celebrate it, others refuse to aknowledge it as they believe it to be a pagan festival. The word Halloween dates back to 1745 and relates to All Hallows’ Eve which dates back even further (around 1556) and All Hallows’ is found in Old English from much earlier still (609AD). All Hallows'(saints) is also known as All Souls’/Saints’ Day and is a Christian festival of three days to remember the dead and faithful departed.
So where did the customs come from. Christians used to make soul cakes (like potato pancakes) to share with all christened souls and poor children went door to door to collect them in exchange for prayers. They carried carved turnips with candles in to light their way. It was also believed that souls roamed the earth during All Hallows’ Eve and so they could be remembered by the living. Some believed that some of them sought vengeance, so people wore masks to hide their identity at this time.
Halloween is seen by many as a time to fear, like those wearing masks and so see it as a time of witches, demons, vampires and so on. Others like to dress up as these creatures for trick or treating. It’s funny how people are quite happy to dress up on halloween and go out for the night and feel perfectly at ease whereas if they were asked to do this any other night it might scare them.
Outfits and masks have differing effects on us. Some are scared to dress up in case they are recognised and look stupid. We find ourselves often wanting to fit in to society or groups of people to feel good about ourselves. We want to hide from sight. Normally this is to do with our confidence in being ourselves. Others like to dress up in full outfits and become somebody else entirely . This comes down to the same thing.
Some people “wear masks” everyday. They pretend to be somebody else to fit in. They act like they enjoy the same things as others, they dress like others and do the same things just to fit in. This is all a way of hiding from others and being afraid of being ourselves or feeling vunerable or stupid. This is especially seen when we are looking for a partner in life or trying to impress at work. The trouble with this is that either you get found out at some point that you have been lying or you get stressed and unhappy about living a lie all the time.
On the odd occasion we act like better, more confident people and do things that we wouldn’t normally do. This sometimes reveals things about our true selves and helps us become better people when we find that we are not actually acting at all and are confident. There are some ideas about how to deal with fear in my previous blog. You can read it here.
Find your true self and conquer any fears that are holding you back. Do you find yourself “wearing a mask” in your day to day life? Find a way to show yourself and if you ARE doing what you really want to do then you shouldn’t have to act. The only time acting will help is when you are trying to overcome your fears, act until you don’t have to act any more.
